“Burnt Norton (Interlude)”

I picked this song primarily because of the mood the lyrics. The most unique track on Lana Del Rey’s Honeymoon album, the song has always so interesting due to her delivery of the lyrics. It’s melancholic, but hopeful; regretful, but she seems to be a peace with what has happened. The song was originally a poem that suggested that if “Time present and time past, Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. If all time is eternally present, All time is unredeemable.” The song´s suggestion is practically that if everything exists at the same moment, then the course of history cannot be altered, so trying to change what has been done is impossible. The song also reflects the major themes of Willy´s character, the most notable being regret. The rest of the poem,¨What might have been is an abstraction, Remaining a perpetual possibility, Only in a world of speculation. What might have been and what has been, Point to one end, which is always present. Footfalls echo in the memory, Down the passage which we did not take, Towards the door we never opened, Into the rose garden.” shows Willy´s tendency to dwell on the past, and to be overcome by flashbacks and memories. This song would be played slightly before Willy even comes onstage, and would require Willy to remain in his car for a moment so that he could reminisce upon the past. The song would end with Willy walking up to the door, ending upon the line ¨into the rose garden.” In the case of this play, the rose garden would be the house, as it contains his regrets and memories. The song would also help the audience by introducing the concept of flashbacks by mentioning multiple periods of time being interlocked, and would hint to his biggest regret, the door he did never opened: not going with his brother.
